Meet Nelson.
Meet Nelson.
Nelson is 64 years old and was homeless for ten years—his car was his only form of shelter. According to Nelson, he became homeless because he was unable to afford rent. During his decade-long battle with homelessness, Nelson’s health declined. He had to have a kidney removed due to cancer, and was also plagued with other health issues.
When Nelson decided to seek help with his housing situation, he turned to the Weingart Access Center. Having never sought help from other housing service providers, Nelson was unsure what to expect. Nelson was welcomed into the Weingart Access Center, where he met with case manager, Mark Trankle. Throughout every interaction, Nelson showed great joy and eagerness, despite all the medical and financial barriers he faced.
As a Weingart Access Center client, Nelson not only received housing navigation and case management services but also assistance with obtaining important documents (CA ID, Social Security Card, etc.) and medical referrals for his many health conditions. With the Weingart Center's help, Nelson was able to maintain his dialysis appointments (three times a week) and is now on a path toward improved health.
On Thursday, December 8, 2022, Nelson signed the lease on his new home. His case manager was there to watch him sign his lease and help him move in. The photos seen here were taken that day.
Congratulations, Nelson. You did it! We’re very proud of you.
