The Gardner Street Women's Bridge Housing Provides Interim Housing for Women in Need

The Weingart Center proudly operates the Gardner Street Women’s Bridge Housing Center in Los Angeles. The 4,000-square-foot building serves as a bridge shelter, or interim housing for women while they find a permanent home.

Amenities at Gardner Street include:

  • 30 beds in the sleeping area with partition walls dividing the beds

  • bathrooms and showers

  • a full kitchen

  • a dining area with ample tables, chairs, and pantry shelves

  • a common area with bookshelves and couches

  • an outdoor gated courtyard

  • a garden

  • 24-hour security

Formerly the West Hollywood Branch Library, the Gardner Street Women’s Bridge Housing Center is a historic site that continues to serve the Los Angeles community. This interim housing solution provides housing and comprehensive services to 30 women experiencing homelessness. Additionally, licensed clinical workers are on staff and on-site to provide life skills training, as well as health and well-being services. The center is unique because all of the staff — from the manager to the security guard to the case workers — are women.

Because the historic integrity of the library is intact, the Los Angeles Conservancy recognized the Gardner Street Women's Bridge Housing Center with the Chair's Preservation Award. Key historic details from the former library remain from the conversion, such as the original circulation desk, central clock, bookshelves, honeycomb breeze screen wall, and matching trellis.

In September 2019, the City of Los Angeles introduced this seventh bridge housing location as part of Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti’s “A Bridge Home” program to open emergency shelters. These interim housing units provide safe, temporary places for unsheltered residents in Los Angeles to stay while they find permanent housing.

The Gardner Street Women’s Bridge Housing Center is located at 1403 North Gardner Street in Hollywood.
