New Bridge Home for the Homeless Opens in Downtown Los Angeles
Special Ribbon Cutting Ceremony and Tour

Los Angeles, CA – August 18, 2020 —  The Weingart Center President & CEO, Senator Kevin Murray, met with Mayor Eric Garcetti for a special ribbon-cutting ceremony and tour of A Bridge Home, Civic Center in Downtown Los Angeles on Friday, August 14, 2020.

“This site will give a lot of hope and help to people literally living on the sidewalks,” stated Mayor Garcetti.

Bridge housing is a temporary housing model that has service-enriched programs aimed to quickly bring homeless Angelenos off the streets and help them rebuild their lives. Bridge housing offers 24/7 security and on-site services such as case management, mental health care, substance abuse treatment, and housing placement. These services aim to help residents stabilize their lives, move on to permanent housing, and stay off the streets for good.

In April 2018, Mayor Garcetti and the City Council declared an emergency shelter crisis and took advantage of a new state law that enables cities to construct bridge housing on any land owned or leased by the City. To expedite construction, the Mayor works with City, County, and State partners to increase funding for bridge housing programs, ease of regulatory barriers, and services.

A Bridge Home, Civic Center officially opened its doors on August 18, 2020 and is operated by the Weingart Center, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit agency that provides homeless individuals with the basic tools necessary to stabilize their lives, secure income, and find permanent housing. As a comprehensive human services organization, the Weingart Center provides direct services to more than 40,000 economically disadvantaged individuals per year, offering programs uniquely tailored to meet the needs of a diverse homeless population.

“Our goal with A Bridge Home, Civic Center is to help homeless Angelenos find a path towards permanent housing and provide them with security, services, and a path to a new future,” stated Senator Murry.
